CNN announces Jim Acosta’s new show

CNN’s new Chief Domestic Correspondent Jim Acosta has been named CNN Newsroom Saturday and Sunday anchor. He will anchor weekends from 3-6pm. Prior to this new role, he covered the White House for CNN for the past seven years, and he served as Chief White House Correspondent since 2018. As previously announced, Pamela Brown now anchors CNN Newsroom on Saturdays and Sundays from 6-9pm, taking over after Acosta. She also serves as Senior Washington correspondent for CNN.

In addition, CNN announced Ana Cabrera will vacate her weekend post and move to weekdays, anchoring Newsroom from 1-2pm. After that, from 2-4pm, Alisyn Camerota and Victor Blackwell will co-anchor Newsroom since Brooke Baldwin announced she is leaving in April. Brianna Keilar will move to New Day with John Berman.

Camerota told CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker, “I would sometimes say to Jeff, you know, it’s kind of hard to do this and get up at 3. And he would basically say, get back in there, and that there was no time to take your foot off the gas. And he was right. So basically, I really wanted to see this through.” But now, Zucker has agreed to move her to afternoons.

Replacing Blackwell on New Day Weekend, Boris Sanchez will join Christi Paul as co-anchor on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Sanchez previously served as a CNN White House correspondent.

Former lawyer for CNN’s Jim Acosta in press battle with White House, Ted Boutrous, retained by Mary Trump

maxresdefault-1Mary Trump, the niece of President Trump who is writing a tell-all book about the Trump family, has retained the services of Ted Boutrous, a popular First Amendment attorney, to battle President Trump’s attack on his niece for her non-disclosure agreement.

Boutrous previously represented CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta, who found his White House press pass revoked for questioning the administration’s immigration policies in 2018. (They got his pass subsequently restored). He also represented Playboy reporter and CNN political analyst Brian Karem in his batle with the Trump administration after Karem got into a verbal altercation with Seb Gorka.

Boutrous said in a statement to the New York Times that the president and his family were trying “to suppress a book that will discuss matters of utmost public importance.” He added, “They are pursuing this unlawful prior restraint because they do not want the public to know the truth. The courts will not tolerate this brazen violation of the First Amendment.”

CNN analyst Brian Karem announces decision to sue White House

Brian Karem, who serves as a CNN political analyst in addition to White House correspondent for Playboy magazine, announced Friday he intends to sue the White House over the the suspension of his WH reporting hard pass for 30 days.

The CNN pundit first received notification on August 2 from the administration that his pass would be revoked because of his aggressive interaction with former administration staffer Sebastian Gorka after a White House event on July 11.

In an appeal letter to White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, he wrote in part, “The crowd was heckling the journalists, and singled me out because of my parting question to President Trump. Then Gorka singled me out, and interpreted my friendly attempt to defuse the situation as a threat. At no point in time was I ever of the mind-set I was going to fight anyone.”

The appeal, however, was not successful, the Hollywood Reporter notes: “We will now go to court and sue,” he announced today on Twitter.

“This suspension of Playboy White House correspondent Brian Karem’s hard pass violates both the First Amendment and the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment,” Theodore Boutrous said, who represented CNN in the network’s successful lawsuit against the White House last November after correspondent Jim Acosta’s hard pass was revoked.

President Trump asks CNN’s Jim Acosta how his book is doing

After CNN’s chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta asked President Donald Trump in Japan Saturday at a press conference about Jamal Khashoggi, things abruptly turned to Acosta’s new book, The Enemy of The People. “With Mohammad bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, when you were asked about the case of Jamal Khashoggi, you did not respond to that question––were you afraid of offending him on that subject?”

“No, not at all,” Trump replied. “I don’t really care about offending people, I sort of thought you’d know that. By the way, congratulations — I understand your book, is it doing well?” Trump added.

“It’s doing very well, Mr. President,” the CNN correspondent answered.

“Really?”

Acosta responded, “I’ll get you an autographed copy.”

“Good, send it. I want to see it.”

He said, “Yes, sir.”

The news of their exchange was first reported by Brian Stelter.

Acosta’s book is currently number ten on The New York Times’ bestseller list.

Jim Acosta honored with Truth to Power Award, says hard pass is “staying with me”

On Monday night, CNN’s chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta was honored by the New York Press Club with the Gabe Pressman Truth to Power Award. The club said in a statement, “We want to thank Mr. Acosta for his impactful speech as it served as a reminder of our journalistic oath.”

They noted that he qualified for the award because of his “courageous reporting in the fact of being called the ‘Enemy of the People'” by President Donald Trump.

In his acceptance speech, Acosta said, “Just because we are pro-truth doesn’t meant we’re anti-Donald Trump.”

Pulling on his hard press pass, he said, “They’re not having it. It’s staying with me.”

The press pass was of course a reference to the White House’s revocation of Acosta’s White House credentials in November of last year. His press access was later restored.

CNN chief White House reporter Jim Acosta pens book about Trump’s war with media

CNN’s Chief White House correspondent and rising network star is penning a book about the Trump White House, reports Brian Stelter. A constant thorn in the side of the Administration, HarperCollins Publishers says Acosta will share “never-before-revealed stories of this White House’s rejection of truth, while laying out the stakes for how Trump’s hostility toward facts poses an unprecedented threat to our democracy.”

The book’s title is The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America. The book will be on the shelves beginning June 11.

Acosta started to gather material for a possible book during the 2016 presidential campaign, and he signed the book deal with Harper last fall, before the 2018 midterm elections, according to the report.

In his statement, he alluded to the press pass incident: “The president and his team, not to mention some of his supporters, have attempted to silence the press in ways we have never seen before. As just about everybody has seen, I have witnessed this first hand. As difficult as that challenge may be for the free press in America, we must continue to do our jobs and report the news. The truth is worth the fight.”

White House pulls star White House reporter Jim Acosta’s press credentials

CNN’s Chief White House correspondent, and a reliable thorn in the side of President Trump and press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, had his press credentials revoked today after a contentious news conference this afternoon.

He was asking a question of the president when Trump was trying to move on, and an intern attempted to take the microphone from Acosta and pass it along to the next reporter. But Acosta kept on, trying to ask his question.

The White House did not like that.

After suspending his press pass, Sanders said, “President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his Administration. We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern. This conduct is absolutely unacceptable.”

The revocation of his pass “was done in retaliation for his challenging questions at today’s press conference,” the CNN statement said. “In an explanation, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders lied. She provided fraudulent accusations and cited an incident that never happened. This unprecedented decision is a threat to our democracy and the country deserves better. Jim Acosta has our full support.”

CNN’s chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta walked out of the White House press briefing today after a tense exchange with White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

“It would be a good thing if you were to say right here at this briefing that the press — are not the enemy of the people,” Acosta said. “I think we deserve that.”

Sanders fired back, “It’s ironic, Jim, that not only you and the media attack the president for his rhetoric when they frequently lower the level of conversation in this country,” Sanders responded. “Repeatedly, repeatedly, the media resorts to personal attacks without any content other than to incite anger. The media has attacked me personally on a number of occasions, including your own network.”
