CNN announces Jim Acosta’s new show

CNN’s new Chief Domestic Correspondent Jim Acosta has been named CNN Newsroom Saturday and Sunday anchor. He will anchor weekends from 3-6pm. Prior to this new role, he covered the White House for CNN for the past seven years, and he served as Chief White House Correspondent since 2018. As previously announced, Pamela Brown now anchors CNN Newsroom on Saturdays and Sundays from 6-9pm, taking over after Acosta. She also serves as Senior Washington correspondent for CNN.

In addition, CNN announced Ana Cabrera will vacate her weekend post and move to weekdays, anchoring Newsroom from 1-2pm. After that, from 2-4pm, Alisyn Camerota and Victor Blackwell will co-anchor Newsroom since Brooke Baldwin announced she is leaving in April. Brianna Keilar will move to New Day with John Berman.

Camerota told CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker, “I would sometimes say to Jeff, you know, it’s kind of hard to do this and get up at 3. And he would basically say, get back in there, and that there was no time to take your foot off the gas. And he was right. So basically, I really wanted to see this through.” But now, Zucker has agreed to move her to afternoons.

Replacing Blackwell on New Day Weekend, Boris Sanchez will join Christi Paul as co-anchor on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Sanchez previously served as a CNN White House correspondent.

Christi Paul stays home while her husband battles COVID

paulNew Day Weekend anchor and HLN correspondent Christi Paul has been staying home and nursing her husband while he battles COVID, she revealed on Instagram. Her co-anchor, Victor Blackwell, has been awaiting the results of his COVID test for twelve days. “I’m still waiting for results,” he said.

“Husband is positive with covid19. Girls & I are all negative,” Paul wrote on Instagram. “Haven’t been able to hold his hand or kiss his forehead . . . We all miss his presence at the dinner table, his laughter & his joshing us.”

Paul concluded, “But we know God gives us His strength when we’re weak & His wisdom when we’re confused & drained. This virus makes no sense. The testing, the paradigm, the transmission… I swear it’s all still a crapshoot.”

When she responded to a comment and offered an update, she said, “He’s actually a little worse today but it’s part of the ups & downs. He’s not in the hospital on a ventilator so I’ll take this. And I pray for everyone who is because this is rough.”

Christi Paul apologizes for saying “gypped”

1280_1x9lcisp1vcuCNN’s New Day Weekend anchor Christi Paul apologized for saying “gypped” on-air on Twitter when someone called her out for doing so, citing the “stigma attached to being Roma/Gypsies.” As NPR noted, “the term [gypped] carries many negative connotations.”

On Twitter, a viewer said to Paul, “Please don’t use the word “g**ped.” There is so much stigma attached to being Roma/Gypsies, and this just rubs salt in the wound, much like “j*wed” does.”

Paul responded and apologized. “I genuinely apologize for using that word. I didn’t realize the weight it carries but I do now. I learn every day & yesterday was no exception.” She added, “When I’m wrong I’ll always admit it. It’s part of being human but it’s also part of learning. I tell my kids there’s no such thing as perfect. Including people.”

HLN announces their 2019 original series

HLN, which airs live news programming during the day, beginning with Morning Express with Robin Meade and ending with On The Story, hosted by a rotation of anchors, including Mike Galanos, Susan Hendricks, Christi Paul, Shyann Malone, and Elizabeth Prann, followed by crime and investigation programming, has more than doubled its Original Series slate in 2019, adding seven new series which will join five returning series, it was announced by Ken Jautz, the executive overseeing HLN.

“HLN continues to be a major destination for successful, quality, mystery and investigation programming. As the longtime exclusive cable network for the mega popular Forensic Files, we recently built on that franchise to introduce Original Series that have also resonated with our viewers. This year we’ve more than doubled our commitment to long-form programming which will complement HLN’s live news shows during the day,” said Jautz.

Among the new hires includes Donnie Walhberg, who will host Very Scary People, touting as “the stories trace the heinous, criminal acts of these elusive miscreants and the eventual road to justice. Episodes include Charles Manson, Aileen Wuornos, the Zodiac Killer, the NorCal Serial Rapist, the Reverend Jim Jones and John Wayne Gacy.”

In addition, Unmasking a Killer, Vengeance: Killer Lovers, American Mystery, Dead Wives Club, Vengeance: Killer Neighbors will make their debuts as well. Set to return this year include Death Row Stories, How It Really Happened with Hill Harper, Inside Evil with Chris Cuomo, and lastly, Something’s Killing Me.

Robin Meade returns after cornea procedure

A few weeks ago, HLN anchor Robin Meade revealed she had a cornea infection which took her off her popular Morning Express program, as we reported on at that time.

Since then, Meade has been off the air for a few weeks, recovering from a cornea correction procedure.

She returned on Monday to host the first two hours of Morning Express, and then Christi Paul took the last three hours. Meade has indicated she hopes to be back to hosting all five hours sometime this week. Upon the advice of her doctor, she is supposed to ease back into it.

Ashleigh Banfield replaced by John King for convention coverage

One nugget can be gleaned from CNN’s press release about its programming during the Republican and Democratic national conventions: John King will be replacing Ashleigh Banfield for the duration. Inside Politics will air from noon to 1pm ET, live from the CNN Grill, pre-empting Banfield’s Legal View.

Although literally every other CNN anchor will be covering the correspondents — yes, even HLN crossover Christi Paul — Banfield was not listed as covering the conventions.

“Anchors Brooke Baldwin, John Berman, Victor Blackwell, Wolf Blitzer, Kate Bolduan, Erin Burnett, Alisyn Camerota, Anderson Cooper, Carol Costello, Chris Cuomo, Poppy Harlow, John King, Don Lemon, Christi Paul, Christine Romans, Michael Smerconish, Jake Tapper, and Fredricka Whitfield will be reporting from the convention sites,” the press release reads.

Jennifer Westhoven’s TV fall

HLN business correspondent Jennifer Westhoven took a tumble today on Morning Express with Robin Meade.

Just as guest anchor Christi Paul was segueing to a commercial break, they were panning out to show the full studio, and Westhoven, a box of popcorn in hand, took off walking and collapsed…

April Fool’s!

Guest attacks CNN for breaking agreement

Pat Brown, a criminal profiler, appeared on New Day for an interview with anchor Christi Paul. At the top of the segment, Paul tried to begin a discussion on Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Dear’s possible anti-government views.

Brown objected to Paul’s line of questioning. “Well, I’m a little disturbed because I made an agreement with CNN to appear this morning only under the condition that we do not talk about the particular shooter, use his name, or show his face.”

She added, “Not to talk about the particular mass murderer. I do not do that. I took a stand three years ago not to talk about individual mass murderers because I believe we in the media are increasing the number of mass murders. It has tripled in the last decade and it’s my belief that the notoriety we give them does this.”

Paul acknowledged her view, saying, “Okay, and I understand that. And I respect your views on that, surely. But we certainly can talk about the investigation into what is happening, can we not?”

“No, we cannot. I specifically said I will only come on if we don’t talk about this individual mass murderer,” Brown objected flatly.

After the abrupt end to the segment, co-anchor Victor Blackwell said, “Let’s be clear, and let me read from the e-mail from Pat Brown. Here’s the quote. Is my segment free of any photo or name of the mass murderer? That segment did not have any photograph nor use the name of the suspect and we held to that agreement.”

And, to an extent, he’s correct. They never said Dear’s name or showed a picture during the segment; however, his name did appear in the chyron.
